Assignment
As one of the largest copper-zinc-molybdenum mines in the world, the Antamina mine, located 4200 metres above sea level in the Andes Mountains, is an important source of employment, government revenue and export earnings for Peru. The social, economic and environmental effects of the large scale mining operation required careful management.
Our Role
Golder has an ongoing role as the Engineer of Record for the design and construction of the tailings dam which will have an ultimate height of over 240 metres. It will be one of the highest embankments in the world. Associated work included a water supply dam, three 3.5-m horseshoe section drill and blast tunnels; three concrete tunnel plugs and two sidehill decant structures, the design of tailings distribution systems, tailings management planning, ongoing geochemical studies, surface water management, and the development of operation, maintenance and surveillance plans and emergency response plans.
